Nvidia's CTO believes that cryptocurrency has no practical use for us

Despite selling large quantities of its powerful processors to the cryptocurrency sector, Nvidia has made a statement that cryptocurrencies do not provide any practical benefits to society. Michael Kagan, the company's CTO, has suggested that the processing power used for cryptocurrency could be more effectively employed in other areas, such as the development of artificial intelligence chatbots like ChatGPT.

Nvidia has not fully embraced the cryptocurrency community and has even taken steps to limit the use of its graphics cards for mining the popular cryptocurrency, Ethereum. In 2021, the company released software that restricted the ability to use its cards for this purpose.

The reason behind Nvidia's decision to limit the use of its graphics cards for mining Ethereum was to prioritize the supply for its preferred customers, such as AI researchers and gamers. Kagan defended this decision by stating that the limited practical value of mining cryptocurrencies justified the move.

Interestingly, the initial version of ChatGPT was trained on a supercomputer consisting of around 10,000 Nvidia graphics cards. According to Kagan, the cryptocurrency sector's interest in using Nvidia's graphics cards for parallel processing was due to the company's superior technology. However, the cryptocurrency industry eventually lost popularity and collapsed, as it was not viewed as a useful contribution to society compared to artificial intelligence.

Kagan explained that ChatGPT provides users with the ability to create and program their own machine according to their specific requirements. If the machine does not function as intended, the user can easily instruct it to perform a different task.

In contrast, the cryptocurrency industry was more comparable to high-frequency trading, which was a lucrative business for Mellanox - the company that Kagan founded before it was acquired by Nvidia. Kagan further elaborated:

"Kagan expressed that he never believed that cryptocurrency would bring any significant benefits to humanity. While people may engage in certain activities related to cryptocurrency, companies should not redirect their focus to support such activities. Instead, companies should prioritize contributing to projects and initiatives that have a positive impact on society."

Initially known for producing high-performance graphics cards for PC gaming, Nvidia's products became a crucial part of the AI revolution inadvertently. The simple yet powerful graphical processors used by gamers were discovered to be much more efficient for the computationally intensive task of training new AI systems, which could otherwise cost millions or even billions of dollars in computing power. As a result, Nvidia's products were in the ideal position to meet the demands of the rapidly growing AI industry.
