Key points:
1. Instead of lamenting AI, we can discover means to utilize it to our advantage.
2. By incorporating a storytelling framework, ChatGPT can assist us in the healing process.
3. AI can act as a writer's calculator, aiding us in gaining insight into our challenges.
4. The "Hero's Journey" structure pairs seamlessly with ChatGPT to empower us to become the hero of our own experiences.
People expressing concerns about AI's future impact are not hard to come by. Some worry that AI will impede creativity and diminish the thinking capabilities of upcoming generations. Even those who acknowledge the advantages of AI in therapeutic contexts approach it with caution.
As an author and publisher, one might expect me to be most anxious about AI's potential consequences. However, as someone who collaborates with writers and those struggling with addiction and depression, I am enthusiastic.
ChatGPT: The Writer's Calculator
I am incredibly thrilled about ChatGPT. In fact, I was so eager to express my appreciation for it that I retrieved my manuscript for my latest book, titled "On Good Authority: 7 Steps to Preparing, Promoting and Profiting from the How-to Book That Makes You the Go-to Expert," from the printer in order to add a section about ChatGPT.
From my perspective, ChatGPT functions as a writer's calculator, capable of assisting anyone with a story to share, or those who have encountered hardships in the past. To test my theory that blending AI with traditional storytelling frameworks could revolutionize a person's self-perception, I asked some of my students to input a few sentences about their personal challenges into ChatGPT and request that the chatbot recount their story using Joseph Campbell's "Hero's Journey" structure.
The outcomes were astonishing.
The Intersection of AI and Storytelling
"My student Sara shared, 'I experienced the most peculiar sensation of serenity after completing this exercise. For years, I've struggled to comprehend my life's challenges, and all of a sudden, everything fell into place.'"
Upon finishing the exercise, Sara recognized that she had been stuck in a career she despised for too long. She realized that she was halfway through her life and that it was time to begin living it with purpose.
It's not new information that writing can aid in the management of issues ranging from depression to addiction recovery. However, through my experiment, I realized the extent to which healing could be amplified by integrating writing into an AI program that employs the hero's journey framework.
The Evolution of Artificial Intelligence in Therapy
For decades, AI has been employed in therapy. In 1966, MIT computer scientist Joseph Weizenbaum launched the ELIZA chatbot, which was inspired by Rogerian therapy. However, now that AI fear is rampant, it's critical that people recognize all of the ways in which it can assist us.
Medical professionals support this view. According to double board-certified psychiatrist Josh Lichtman, "due to synaptic plasticity- our brain's ability to change- reading about one's own struggles depicted as heroic could transform their entire perception of their past." Employing Anna's approach to have technology narrate one's story through the lens of the hero's journey allows them to realize how much they've persevered and prospered.
Utilizing the Hero's Journey as a Framework: A Guide
A Guide on Using the Hero's Journey Framework to Overcome Struggles with AI
Begin by identifying your greatest struggles, whether it be a traumatic experience or a persistent mental health issue. Type "Use the Hero's Journey framework to tell the story of a person who has overcome" and insert your experience into the prompt. After the chatbot generates your story, read it aloud to allow it to sink in. Pay attention to how it feels to see yourself as the hero of your own story and take notes on your new perspective in a journal.
One of my students, Sara, reflected on the experience, stating that "seeing how AI called me by my name made it even more poignant...it made me see how much I was the one refusing to change." The following day, Sara resigned from her job.
While the impact of AI on our lives is yet to be fully understood, it's important to embrace and utilize the tools available to us. Acceptance is a key element of happiness, and AI can potentially help us in our journey toward overcoming struggles.
