Hyper Light Breaker appears to be a chilling combination of some of the finest games in existence.

As an indie game enthusiast, Hyper Light Drifter is easily one of my favorites from the last decade. My imagination was captured by its compelling blend of arcade-style gameplay, stunning pixel art, and immersive world-building. I'm excited to see the spiritual successor, Hyper Light Breaker, expand on these influences even more ambitiously.

A recent gameplay trailer released by IGN has given us a glimpse of what to expect from this upcoming action RPG. The game appears to feature nods to some of the biggest blockbusters in the industry, and Heart Machine has promised "infinite open worlds" that are just as vibrant as those found in No Man's Sky. I'm eagerly anticipating the release of this game and hoping that the developers can live up to the hype.

The trailer for Hyper Light Breaker features a segment where the protagonist is seen hang gliding onto a set of ancient ruins, reminiscent of the world of Breath of the Wild. Another part of the trailer showcases the variety of load-outs players can customize, including various weapons. While not necessarily offering the same level of loot chase as Borderlands, combat is clearly a key focus. The music by Joel Corelitz and Troupe Gammage perfectly complements the action.

However, at its heart, Hyper Light Breaker is a roguelike game that uses procedural generation to create a unique world every time the player character dies. Initially, the game's map was designed as a series of fragmented biomes, but Heart Machine announced earlier this year that it has combined everything into a single, ever-changing map for simplicity. For more information about the game's development, the Noclip documentary provides great insight.

Following the release of their imaginative yet flawed action platformer Solar Ash in 2021, Heart Machine announced Hyper Light Breaker in April of the same year. Before that, the studio had spent years developing Hyper Light Drifter, a Kickstarter project that quickly amassed a cult following. Eventually, the game lived up to its promises, becoming one of the best indie games of 2016.

Rather than attempting to replicate the original game's success with a strict sequel, Hyper Light Breaker takes a bold approach by exploring the themes and atmosphere of the first game in a completely new direction. The latest trailer showcases the game's diverse features, including online co-op, and while the rogue-lite genre may not appeal to everyone, I remain cautiously optimistic. Hyper Light Breaker is set to arrive on Steam Early Access in the fall of 2023.
